Devotion on I Peter 1:17-23

Please read the passage first.

Humanity is in trouble. It needed a parachute, so to speak, in order to give it another chance to live the life God intended. God has provided that chance in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As I Peter 1:18 sees it, humanity needed ransoming from itself. It devoted itself to its own futile ways.
Sometimes, people use a parachute for sport, of course. However, I am thinking now of the parachute designed to save your life when you get in trouble. We know it commonly for people, but today, personal planes can have parachutes. God has provided a parachute for humanity. The question with which the gospel confronts us is whether we will trust it. Yet, we cannot stop with simple salvation from death. What will the rest of our lives look like? I Peter 1:22 makes it clear that two principles need to guide us: obedience to truth and genuine mutual love. We will need to develop both if we are to lead the Christian life.
